How We Size It

Start With the Load, Not the Panel

The right upgrade depends on what your home actually draws and what you plan to add, whether that’s a kitchen remodel, an addition, or new equipment. We review your current load first, then recommend the panel, service size, or subpanel that fits.

How It Works

What to Expect From Your Upgrade

A panel upgrade follows a clear sequence.

01Step 1

Load Review

We check your existing panel, its amperage, and the equipment you run now or plan to add.

02Step 2

Recommendation & Estimate

We explain the upgrade that fits, whether a new panel, a service upgrade, or a subpanel, and give you an estimate.

03Step 3

Upgrade & Label

We install the new equipment, reconnect and test your circuits, and label the panel before we finish.

Panel FAQs

Panel & Service Upgrade Questions

Plain answers about panels, service size, subpanels, and surge protection.

Q1

How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?

Common reasons include a panel with no open spaces, plans for a remodel, addition, or major new appliance, an older panel near the end of its useful life, or a service too small for your home’s needs. If breakers trip or lights flicker, start with Electrical Troubleshooting & Repair, since the cause isn’t always the panel.

Q2

What’s the difference between a panel upgrade and a service upgrade?

A panel upgrade replaces the breaker panel inside your home. A service upgrade increases the amount of power coming into the house, which can involve the meter base and the line from the utility, and usually includes a new panel as well.

Q3

What size service does my home need?

It depends on your home’s size, appliances, heating and cooling, and plans for things like an EV charger. Many homes today have 200-amp service, but the right size comes from a load review rather than a rule of thumb.

Q4

What is a subpanel, and when do I need one?

A subpanel is a smaller panel fed from your main panel, adding breaker space in another part of the home, such as a finished basement or an addition. For a barn or detached garage, see Pole Barn & Detached Building Wiring.

Q5

What does whole-home surge protection do?

A whole-home surge protector installs at the panel and limits voltage spikes before they reach your appliances, electronics, and HVAC equipment. It works alongside plug-in surge strips rather than replacing them.

Q6

Can I replace my own panel?

It’s not a DIY job. Panel work involves the main service connection, which stays energized even with the main breaker off, so it should be handled by a licensed electrician.
